How Does an Air Conditioner Actually Work?


Air conditioning is something most of us use without thinking too much about what is happening inside the system. You press a button, cool air starts flowing, and the room becomes more comfortable.

But an air conditioner does not simply “make cold air”. In fact, the real process is a clever transfer of heat. Your air conditioner removes heat from inside the room and moves it outside.
Understanding this process helps you appreciate why correct installation, regular servicing, and choosing the right system are so important.

Your aircon removes heat from the room


When your indoor air conditioning unit is running in cooling mode, it pulls warm air from the room into the unit. Inside the indoor unit is a coil known as the evaporator coil. Refrigerant flows through this coil and absorbs heat from the indoor air.

As the warm air passes over the cold coil, heat is removed from the air. The now cooled air is then blown back into the room by the indoor fan.
This is why the room starts to feel cooler. The system is not creating cold from nothing. It is removing heat and replacing the room air with cooler, conditioned air.

The refrigerant carries the heat outside


The refrigerant inside the air conditioning system is the key part of the cooling process. It moves continuously between the indoor unit and the outdoor condenser through copper piping.

After absorbing heat from the indoor air, the refrigerant carries that heat to the outdoor unit. This is why the indoor and outdoor units must be properly connected, correctly charged with refrigerant, and installed according to manufacturer specifications.
If the refrigerant level is incorrect, if the pipework is poorly installed, or if there is a leak, the system will not cool efficiently and may suffer damage over time.


The outdoor unit rejects the heat


Once the refrigerant reaches the outdoor condenser, the heat it collected from inside the room is released into the outside air. The outdoor fan helps move air across the condenser coil, allowing the heat to be rejected efficiently.

This is why you will often feel warm air blowing from the outdoor unit while the indoor unit is cooling the room. That warmth is the heat that has been removed from inside your home or office.

The refrigerant then returns to the indoor unit and the cycle starts again.

Why the installation matters


A split air conditioning system may look simple from the outside, but it relies on a carefully balanced process. The indoor unit, outdoor unit, refrigerant pipework, electrical supply, drainage, and control wiring all need to work together correctly.
A poor installation can lead to problems such as:
  • Reduced cooling performance
  • Higher electricity usage
  • Water leaks from the indoor unit
  • Refrigerant leaks
  • Noisy operation
  • Shorter system lifespan
  • Costly repairs

This is why professional installation is essential. A properly installed air conditioner will operate more efficiently, cool the space more effectively, and last longer.

Why regular servicing is important


Over time, dust and dirt build up inside the indoor unit, filters, coils, and outdoor condenser. This restricts airflow and makes the system work harder than it should.

When airflow is reduced, the air conditioner may use more electricity, cool less effectively, and place unnecessary strain on the compressor and fan motors.

Regular servicing helps keep your system clean, efficient, and reliable. It also allows small issues to be identified before they become expensive breakdowns.

A proper service should include checking the filters, coils, drainage, refrigerant performance, electrical components, and general operation of the system.

Your aircon can be efficient when used correctly


Modern inverter air conditioners are designed to maintain a comfortable temperature while using electricity efficiently. Instead of constantly switching on and off at full power, an inverter system can adjust its output to match the room’s cooling demand.

For best performance, set your aircon to a comfortable temperature rather than the coldest possible setting. In most cases, a setting of around 22°C to 24°C is comfortable for cooling while helping to avoid unnecessary energy use.

Keeping doors and windows closed, cleaning filters regularly, and servicing the unit on schedule can also make a noticeable difference.

The simple version


Your air conditioner works by moving heat.

It pulls warm air from the room, removes heat from that air, blows cooled air back into the space, carries the heat outside through the refrigerant circuit, and rejects that heat through the outdoor condenser.

This cycle repeats continuously until the room reaches the temperature you have selected.
